Before you mark: Watch for children circling letters instead of words.
  1. Ducks swim.
    how many words?
    2
Straightforward — the answer is the whole story.
  2. The big dog barks.
    how many words?
    4
Straightforward — the answer is the whole story.
  3. My shoes are wet.
    how many words?
    4
Straightforward — the answer is the whole story.
Secure looks like: Given a four-word sentence containing ONE multisyllabic word and ONE one-letter word, the child counts it correctly both by ear and on the page, and can answer “how do you know?” with the spot test rather than by guessing.
