Warm-up
This is the first lesson of the year — there is nothing behind it yet. Begin at the big idea.

What we are learning

Every number tells you HOW MANY, and counting each thing once is how we find it.

How it is done — keep this beside you

These steps stay on your page while you work. If you get stuck, find the step you are on and read it again before you put your hand up.

1
Here are some counters. I will not guess — I will count.

2
I touch each one as I say the number. One.

3
Two. Three. I do not skip and I do not go back.
● ● ● ● ● ① ● ● ● ● ① ② ③ ● ●
4
Four. Five. The last number I said is how many there are.
● ● ● ● ● ① ● ● ● ● ① ② ③ ● ● ① ② ③ ④ ⑤
5
Five counters. I write the numeral.

Ask yourself: “Did I touch every one, and only once?”
Watch for
A child who says the answer instantly is recognizing, not counting, and will fail at 8 and 9. Ask them to touch each one even when they are right.
