Grade 1 · Day 61

L49 · Final consonant blends sk, sp, st; sentences

Today

p.65 — a column of real words on one pattern. 41 words and 6 sentences, 30.4 minutes.

The one thing

sk, sp, st

No new sound — every sound in these is already taught. What is new is that they sit side by side with nothing between them, and that is a syllable shape Somali, Arabic do not allow.

The s comes first and the stop comes last, and the last one is the one that gets lost. Say 'ask' and hold your tongue at the back where the k finishes.

They check it: Say the word, then say only the last sound. /k/. Now the whole word again with the k still there.

Watch for

'ask' as 'as', 'desk' as 'des'. This is the most-dropped cluster in English worldwide, including in native varieties — expect it to need returning to, and do not treat it as carelessness.
