Grade 2 · Day 17

L15 · Short vowels a, e, i, o, u

Today

Second day on the same lesson — p.22, a column of real words on one pattern. Do not re-teach it. Re-run the column and go at whatever the children were not accurate on yesterday.

The one thing

tongue herevoice ON
/ɛ/ · short e

Mouth open about half as wide as for short a. Lips still spread. Tongue in the middle — /e/, as in 'bed'.

They check it: Say 'bad' then 'bed' with a hand under your chin. Feel the jaw come UP.

Not in Arabic. For those children this is a new physical skill, not a reminder. Do not let the column start until the mouth can make it.

Watch for

/æ/ and /ɪ/ — it sits between them.
