Grade 2 · Day 19

L15 · Short vowels a, e, i, o, u

Today

Second day on the same lesson — p.22, a column of real words on one pattern. Do not re-teach it. Re-run the column and go at whatever the children were not accurate on yesterday.

The one thing

tongue herevoice ON
/ɒ/ · short o

Open wide like short a, but now pull your tongue BACK and let your lips go round — /o/, as in 'hot'.

They check it: Mirror: wide open, but the lips are round, not smiling. That is what separates it from short a.

Not in Somali. For those children this is a new physical skill, not a reminder. Do not let the column start until the mouth can make it.

Watch for

/æ/ — the jaw is the same, the tongue and lips are not.
