Grade K · Day 90

L46 · Final consonant blends nk, nc, nch

Today

p.63 — a column of real words on one pattern. 28 words and 7 sentences, 30.4 minutes.

The one thing

nk, nc, nch

No new sound — every sound in these is already taught. What is new is that they sit side by side with nothing between them, and that is a syllable shape Somali does not allow.

Both sounds are at the END, and both have to arrive. Say the word, then stop your mouth exactly where it finishes and hold it there. hand — feel your tongue still up on the ridge.

They check it: Say the word, then say ONLY its last sound. If you cannot find a last sound, it got dropped.

Watch for

Dropping the last one: 'hand' as 'han', 'jump' as 'jum'. Note also that the n in 'bank' is not /n/ — it is /ŋ/, because the tongue is already back for the k. Do not correct a child who says it that way; that is what the word IS.
