L48 · Final consonant blends ct, ft, pt, xt; sentences

Today

p.64 — a column of real words on one pattern. 19 words and 11 sentences, 30.4 minutes.

The one thing

ct, ft, pt, xt

No new sound — every sound in these is already taught. What is new is that they sit side by side with nothing between them, and that is a syllable shape Somali, Arabic do not allow.

Two stops in a row, and neither one gets a vowel. Say the first and hold your mouth shut on it, then move straight to the second. left โ€” the f, then the t, with nothing in between.

They check it: Say the word, then say only the last sound. Then clap: one beat.

Watch for

Dropping the last stop โ€” 'left' as 'lef' โ€” or adding a beat: 'lef-ut'. Both are the same repair from opposite directions.
