Key nouns — meet the words
Some nouns name things you can touch. Others name ideas — and those are the ones writers need.
The words
Watch how it is built
1topic means about the same as what it is about.
Our topic today is rain.
2part means about the same as one piece.
This part of the plant is the root.
3group means about the same as things together.
That group of birds flew away.
Two ways to say it
✗ Our what it is about today is rain. — this is not wrong, but it is everyday talk.
✓ Our topic today is rain. — this is how a writer says it.
Ask yourself: “Can I point at it?”
Remember
A noun names it. An academic noun names an IDEA.
