Key nouns — use the words

Some nouns name things you can touch. Others name ideas — and those are the ones writers need.

1place means about the same as where.
A desert is a dry place.
2time means about the same as when.
Spring is the time plants grow.
3change means about the same as when it turns.
We saw a change in the sky.

Two ways to say it

✗ A desert is a dry where. — this is not wrong, but it is everyday talk.

✓ A desert is a dry place. — this is how a writer says it.

Ask yourself: “Can I point at it?”
