Key nouns — meet the words

Some nouns name things you can touch. Others name ideas — and those are the ones writers need.

The words

problem
something wrong
idea
a thought
fact
a true thing

Watch how it is built

1problem means about the same as something wrong.
The problem was that the seed died.
2idea means about the same as a thought.
She had an idea for the model.
3fact means about the same as a true thing.
It is a fact that rain is water.

Two ways to say it

✗ The something wrong was that the seed died. — this is not wrong, but it is everyday talk.

✓ The problem was that the seed died. — this is how a writer says it.

Ask yourself: “Does my sentence still make sense without the word?”

Remember

Write it in your own sentence, not mine.
