Expand with WHEN

Some nouns name things you can touch. Others name ideas — and those are the ones writers need.

What it is

It rained. is true, but your reader does not know if you mean today, last year, or every spring. Telling when lets them put your sentence in time.

Watch it built

1
Start with the sentence you have.
It rained.
2
Ask yourself: when?
When did it rain? Last night.
3
Put the answer at the end.
It rained last night.

One more

The bell rang.
The bell rang after lunch.
Remember
Ask when? and put the answer at the end.
Ask yourself: “Can I point at it?”

Remember

Sound, light, space — words for what is around us.
