Join with AND
Some nouns name things you can touch. Others name ideas — and those are the ones writers need.
What it is
When two short sentences belong together, a reader hears them as two separate little thoughts. Joining them with and shows they are one thought. Use and when the second thing goes ALONG WITH the first.
Watch it built
1Here are two sentences that belong together.
The sun rose. The ice melted.
2Take out the period.
The sun rose the ice melted.

↓
The door opened and the cat ran out.
Remember
Two ideas that go together: join them with and.
Ask yourself: “Does my sentence still make sense without the word?”
Remember
A verb makes the sentence move.
