Words with a long vowel

A long vowel is spelled with two letters that together make one sound.

What it is

A long vowel says its own name — the a in cake. It usually needs a partner letter to make it long, and the commonest partner is a silent e at the end. That e makes no sound of its own; its whole job is to change the vowel before it.

Watch it built
