Key verbs — use the words
A word is yours when you can put it in a sentence that needed it.

1explain means about the same as tell why.
Explain why the plant died.
2compare means about the same as see how alike.
Compare the two leaves.
3describe means about the same as tell about.
Describe what you saw.
Two ways to say it
✗ Explain why the plant died. — this is not wrong, but it is everyday talk.
✓ Explain why the plant died. — this is how a writer says it.
Ask yourself: “Would my sentence still work if I took the word out?”
