Words with a long vowel
The long-vowel spellings work on words never seen before.
What it is
A long vowel says its own name — the a in cake. It usually needs a partner letter to make it long, and the commonest partner is a silent e at the end. That e makes no sound of its own; its whole job is to change the vowel before it.
Watch it built
1Say the word and listen to the vowel. Does it say its name?

2Write the sounds you can hear.
c a k
3Add the silent e that made the vowel long.
