What is special about academic English? — meet the words
You have met these words and used them. Now you choose between them.
The words
Watch how it is built
1obtain means about the same as get.
We obtained water from the tap.
2locate means about the same as find.
Locate the river on the map.
3construct means about the same as build.
They constructed a small bridge.
Two ways to say it
✗ We geted water from the tap. — this is not wrong, but it is everyday talk.
✓ We obtained water from the tap. — this is how a writer says it.
Ask yourself: “Which of these two is closer to what I mean?”
Remember
The long word is not automatically better.
