What is special about academic English? — use the words
Two words can both fit a sentence, and one of them fits better.
The words

1occur means about the same as happen.
Rain occurs most in spring.
2assist means about the same as help.
She assisted her partner.
3permit means about the same as let.
The rules permit two tries.
Two ways to say it
✗ Rain happens most in spring. — this is not wrong, but it is everyday talk.
✓ Rain occurs most in spring. — this is how a writer says it.
Ask yourself: “Who is reading this, and does my word suit them?”
Remember
Write it twice, for two readers.
