Key nouns — use the words

Teacher edition · Grade 3 · Lesson 25 · blocked
One exact noun beats three vague ones.

1. MATCH

Draw a line from each school word to the everyday word that means about the same.
method — the way to do it
evidence — proof
pattern — what repeats
effect — what it caused
source — where it came from
MATCH — watch forRecognition only. A child can do this by elimination without meaning anything by the word, which is why it is rung one and not the whole sheet.

2. CHOOSE

Fill each gap with the right word. Word bank: effect, evidence, method, pattern, source.
Word bank: effect, evidence, method, pattern, source.
Our method was to measure each day.
The wet soil is evidence of rain.
We saw a pattern in the weather.
The effect of heat is melting.
The sun is the source of light.
CHOOSE — watch forPRACTICE MODE: blocked. All gaps come from today's set.

3. FRAME

Finish each sentence.
Expect the FULL sentence on the line, not just the missing word. A one-word answer is incomplete — ask for it again.
Although ___
Although rainone possible answer — accept any full sentence that uses the word properly
In contrast, ___
In contrast, rainone possible answer — accept any full sentence that uses the word properly
FRAME — watch forThe release to independence. Today's scaffold is “opening only”, and it shrinks each time this unit returns until there is no frame at all — the child should be able to feel it coming off.

4. PRODUCE

Write your own sentences using the school words. Target: 1 paragraph (5–7 sentences). A + means more than one sentence in that slot. Only one of yours may use the frame. Choose which one needs it.
method

effect

source

PRODUCE — watch forThe printed target is the LOTF move: the child can see what a full answer looks like instead of guessing how much is enough. The Today's frame ration is 1 — say it aloud, and say BOTH halves: the frame is there if they need it, and it is better writing without it.

5. JUDGE

For each pair, mark which version suits the reader named — and say why.
method / the way to do it which fits? method — for a school report; the way to do it — for talking to a friend
evidence / proof which fits? evidence — for a school report; proof — for talking to a friend
pattern / what repeats which fits? pattern — for a school report; what repeats — for talking to a friend
effect / what it caused which fits? effect — for a school report; what it caused — for talking to a friend
source / where it came from which fits? source — for a school report; where it came from — for talking to a friend
JUDGE — watch forOver-formal writing is a real fault, not a safe one. A child who always picks the longer word has learned vocabulary, not register.
