Key verbs — use the words

Two words can both fit a sentence, and one of them fits better.

The words

record
write down
measure
find how much
predict
say what will happen
suggest
put forward
increase
go up

Watch how it is built

1record means about the same as write down.
Record the temperature each morning.
2measure means about the same as find how much.
Measure the water in the cup.
3predict means about the same as say what will happen.
Predict which seed grows first.

Two ways to say it

✗ Record the temperature each morning. — this is not wrong, but it is everyday talk.

✓ Record the temperature each morning. — this is how a writer says it.

Ask yourself: “Who is reading this, and does my word suit them?”

Remember

The verb decides how the sentence moves.
