Writing Book 5 · Lesson 10

Nouns and the words they combine with — bring the words back

Some words simply go together, and the pairing has to be learned rather than worked out.

The words

draw a conclusion
decide
conduct a study
do research
raise a question
ask
provide evidence
give proof
play a part
help
reach agreement
agree
meet a need
satisfy

Watch how it is built

1draw a conclusion means about the same as decide.
We drew a conclusion from the data.
2conduct a study means about the same as do research.
They conducted a study on sleep.
3raise a question means about the same as ask.
The result raises a question.

Two ways to say it

✗ We drew a conclusion from the data. — this is not wrong, but it is everyday talk.

✓ We drew a conclusion from the data. — this is how a writer says it.

Ask yourself: “Have I heard these two words together before?”

Remember

Some words simply go together.
