Writing Book 8 · Lesson 2
Notes that serve an essay
Notes taken for an essay are laid out as the essay will run, with quotations and pages attached.
What it is
Notes taken to remember and notes taken to WRITE FROM are laid out differently. If an essay is coming, each main idea should be a paragraph you intend to write, put in the order you will write them — and the quotation you plan to use goes underneath, with its page number, because you will need it and will not want to hunt for it.
Watch it built
1Write the main idea as the point of a paragraph you will write.
Body 2 — the cost was underestimated
2Indent the support in your own words.
Budget left out maintenance completely
3Under that, the exact words you will quote, with the page.
“no provision was made for upkeep” (p.44)
Remember
One main idea per paragraph you will write, in order, quotation and page attached.
Ask yourself: “Could I write a paragraph from this line without reopening the book?”
Remember
One main idea per paragraph you intend to write, in essay order.
