Chunks: useful phrases — use the words

Teacher edition · Grade 8 · Lesson 24 · blocked
Steer the reader. Do not fill the line.

1. MATCH

Draw a line from each academic word to the everyday word that means about the same.
it is worth noting that — note that
with the exception of — except
insofar as — to the degree that
by and large — mostly
in the context of — when looking at
all things considered — on balance
that being said — even so

in so doing — by doing that
as regards — about

MATCH — watch forRecognition only. A child can do this by elimination without meaning anything by the word, which is why it is rung one and not the whole sheet.

2. CHOOSE

Fill each gap with the right word. Word bank: all things considered, as regards, by and large, for the purposes of, in so doing, in the context of, insofar as, it is worth noting that, notwithstanding, that being said, to put it another way, with the exception of.

it is worth noting that costs vary.
with the exception of one, all passed.
insofar as the data allow, this holds.
by and large, the method works.
in the context of drought, this matters.
all things considered, the plan is sound.
that being said, costs remain high.
to put it another way, light drives growth.
for the purposes of this essay, we assume X.
in so doing, they solved the problem.
as regards cost, the plan is cheap.
notwithstanding the delay, work finished.
CHOOSE — watch forPRACTICE MODE: blocked. All gaps come from today's set.

3. FRAME

Write these sentences with no frame to help you.
Expect the FULL sentence on the line, not just the missing word. A one-word answer is incomplete — ask for it again.
FRAME — watch forThe release to independence. Today's scaffold is “none”, and it shrinks each time this unit returns until there is no frame at all — the child should be able to feel it coming off.

4. PRODUCE

Write your own sentences using the academic words. Target: 5 paragraphs. A + means more than one sentence in that slot. No frames today. You have had them three times; the words are yours.
it is worth noting that

PRODUCE — watch forThe printed target is the LOTF move: the child can see what a full answer looks like instead of guessing how much is enough. The Today's frame ration is 0 — say it aloud, and say BOTH halves: the frame is there if they need it, and it is better writing without it.

5. JUDGE

For each pair, mark which version suits the reader named — and say why.
it is worth noting that / note that which fits? it is worth noting that — for a school report; note that — for talking to a friend
with the exception of / except which fits? with the exception of — for a school report; except — for talking to a friend
insofar as / to the degree that which fits? insofar as — for a school report; to the degree that — for talking to a friend
by and large / mostly which fits? by and large — for a school report; mostly — for talking to a friend
in the context of / when looking at which fits? in the context of — for a school report; when looking at — for talking to a friend
all things considered / on balance which fits? all things considered — for a school report; on balance — for talking to a friend
that being said / even so which fits? that being said — for a school report; even so — for talking to a friend
to put it another way / in other words which fits? to put it another way — for a school report; in other words — for talking to a friend
for the purposes of / for which fits? for the purposes of — for a school report; for — for talking to a friend

as regards / about which fits? as regards — for a school report; about — for talking to a friend
notwithstanding / despite which fits? notwithstanding — for a school report; despite — for talking to a friend
JUDGE — watch forOver-formal writing is a real fault, not a safe one. A child who always picks the longer word has learned vocabulary, not register.
